Homemade Gummy Bears & Worms

Can we celebrate for a moment together?

This recipe, Y’all! It’s perfect. Well, perfect if you have a gummy bear craving but don’t eat much sugar.

These gummies use tea which is so cool and you can also use low carb sugar. Perfect, right?

You could even use your favorite tea flavor…like perhaps pumpkin spice, LOL!

Sarah in Light My Heart has been busy preparing for Halloween. She loves making homemade candies for her daughter, Kelsey. Sometimes homemade is just the right answer to satisfy all your cravings and warm the heart.

She first made two flavors of chocolates because she has a bit of an addiction to all the chocolate love. Kelsey on the other hand loves her gummy treats a little bit more.

One bag of gummies is never enough in their house. (I suspect Sarah will need to double or triple the recipe.)

These gummies are all the same color but for a good reason.

When I first started on my keto journey close to two years ago, I made gummies with sugar-free Jello-O. Full transparency: The sugar-free Jello-O was not a good option. That’s my personal opinion though. You may love it.

I did catch some recipes using tea and thought that would be a cool alternative. Especially because the recipe would be more natural and free of all the additives and extras.

Like I said up above: Perfect.

The amount of flavor from the tea and the sugar added, made the gummies sweet and satisfied all the candy cravings.

Even better, the recipe is super easy to make.

Homemade Gummy Bears & Worms

Recipe by Terra Kelly

Prep: 5-10 minutes

Cook: 2-3 minutes

Makes: 106 Gummy Bears and 20 Gummy Worms

This recipe used silicone gummy bear molds and worm molds.

Ingredients

2 bags cranberry tea (or your favorite tea)

2 bags caramel apple tea (or your favorite tea)

2 cups water

4 Tbsp Truvia cane sugar blend (or favorite sugar)

4 Tbsp unflavored powdered gelatin (or beef gelatin powder)

Directions

Boil one cup of water, add two cranberry tea bags, and steep tea for about five minutes. Repeat process for caramel apple tea.

In a small pan on medium low heat, add ½ cup prepared tea, 2 Tbsp sugar, 2 Tbsp gelatin. Stir frequently until the sugar and gelatin dissolve completely. After filling the first gummy bear mold and half of the worm mold, repeat the process for the second tea.

The molds come with a dropper but if you don’t have one, use a syringe or dropper to fill each bear and worm mold with the prepared tea.

Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes for the gummy bears and worms to set.

Once the gummies are set you can easily pop each one out of the mold and store them in a closed container at room temperature.

Notes: I made too much tea for the recipe. Each flavor will only use ½ cup of tea, but you could make a little extra to cover for the spills that could happen. That’s why I recommended 2 cups of water, one cup for each flavor.

If you want to add food coloring to make all the pretty gummy colors, only add one drop of coloring to the ½ cup of tea.

You could use erythritol instead of Truvia so you have zero carbs from the sugar. Or it you love your granulated sugar, go for it. You would still use 2 Tbsp of sugar for each option.

If you’re curious about the molds, you can find them on Amazon. There are a variety to choose from. I think the three gummy bear molds and one worm mold together were under ten dollars.

The gelatin choice: You can use unflavored gelatin powder. I first used beef gelatin powder when I started on the keto journey. The beef gelatin sounds odd but there is literally no flavor to the product and it worked perfectly with this recipe.
